Building home for Mr. Nguyễn Văn Luôn and his Son

Mr. Nguyễn Văn Luôn and his son are currently living in a self-made shelter in Vinh Loc commune, Hong Dan district, Bac Lieu province. He

has a mentally disabled 25 years old son. His wife left over 10 years ago. He suffers himself with high blood sugar. When we tried to visit him, he was not at home, if one can call it home, as he travelled to a temple, where they provide natural medications free of charge for controlling blood sugar. However, we managed to visit and speak with his son.
Their old primitive house collapsed two years ago, and he is currently living in a temporary self-made shelter on his small property of 1000 sqm until he can afford to build a house. On heavy rainy days, they spend time and sleep at nearby living relatives.
With the help of relatives and neighbours they brought large amount of river mud for making foundation for the home. It is common in rural area of Bac Lieu province for disadvantaged families to use river mud, which become hard as concrete, for house foundation.
The family has a pond on their 1000 sqm property in which they bread shrimp. This brings a small amount of income to them. The mentally disabled son works as a helping hand on casual basis and earns some money. He could not answer when we asked him how much he earns. He said that he can’t count money and he also said that he gives whatever he earns straight to his father.
